It's been a few weeks since I watched this and I am still mulling over why it wasn't as powerful as it should have been. I think it lacked some focus on the transition of Lee Miller model/muse to war photographer (it's a real life transformation).

Definitely agree. It didn't really explore her photography at all, despite her being a photographer...? You'd think the filmmaker would use that to help explore her character. I am not totally sure it was cast as well as it could have been, either. I think Kate Winslet is amazing, but I'm not sure she was right for this role.

Lastly, I just think it felt too much like a typical biopic. With a story and star at the helm this strong I was expecting better/more interesting choices.

I had wondered whether they should have considered writing it as the son's story - the journey of discovering his mother's history that she kept from him. I mean, that's pretty interesting right? That he had no idea!

Super interesting! I guess the one positive I can provide about the movie is it inspired me to read about the person. So that's good. But yeah ironically, like you, when I learned about the original story I felt it was clearer to see what the film missed.

It seems as though her son, in the grand scheme of things, is the major photographer in the family, and after his mother (Lee) died, he decided to go through her things and found this trove of amazing photos and adventures. They have a great story on their hands but the perspective from which they told this didn't do the story justice.

You know?
